Game 1

Brazil 4-3 USA

(Rio De Janeiro, Aug 17 1930, Friendly)

Brazil, disappointed by their exit from the inaugural World Cup, played three friendlies in quick succession during the month of August, winning all of them. The USA, though, did themselves little damage by scoring three goals in Rio. Doca, Carvalho Leite, Preguinho and Teophilo netted for the hosts. Patenaude, Goncalves and Brown responded for the USA.


Game 2

USA 0-2 Brazil

(Seattle, May 28 1976, Friendly)

More than a generation passed before the next meeting, but even though it was on US soil this time, Brazil were easy victors. Still, it was a strange game: while being an official FIFA friendly, this was actually a US league representative side put together to celebrate the country's Bicentennial. Gil of Fluminense scored twice to settle the game.


Game 3

Brazil 3-0 USA

(Fortaleza, Feb 26 1992, Friendly)
Carlos Alberto Parreira's side kicked off 1992 with a thumping win over Bora Milutinovic's side, Antonio Carlos and Rai, both of Sao Paolo, providing the goals against a US side led by Tab Ramos.


Game 4

USA 0-1 Brazil

(Los Angeles, Aug 2 1992, Friendly)

It was much closer later in the year, as the United States almost pulled off a shock in front of a home crowd. Bebeto, still going strong after joining Deportivo La Coruna from Vasco da Gama, scored the only goal of the game past Tony Meola.


Game 5

USA 0-2 Brazil

(New Haven, Jun 6 1993, Friendly)

Brazil raced to an early lead in the 'US Cup' of 1993 - a tournament in which the USA stunned England and Brazil only managed one win. This was it. Napoli's Careca and Gremio's Luis Carlos Winck scored the goals in the first half.

Brazil 1-0 USA

(San Francisco, Jul 4 1994, World Cup)

Finally, a competitive meeting between the two sides. There was to be no upset in the form book, though, as 'home team' Brazil once again fell prey to the in-form Bebeto as the Brazilians headed towards a memorable World Cup victory in America. It was Independence Day in the USA, but the Brazilians were the ones celebrating. Still, for the USA, it was an all-time best exit in the World Cup - the Round of 16 - as soccer inched further and further towards the mainstream.


Game 7

USA 0-1 Brazil

(Maldonado, Jul 20 1995, Friendly)

The Copa America brought these two sides together the following year in Uruguay. It was a characteristically close tie as these two met in the semi-finals, a sole goal from Aldair doing the honours for Brazil. The Selecao went on to lose on penalties to the hosts in the final; the USA were crushed by Colombia in the third-place play-off.


Game 8

Brazil 1-0 USA

(San Diego, Jan 18 1996, CONCACAF Gold Cup)

An odd one, this: the CONCACAF Gold Cup took place in the USA in 1996, but a non-federation side was invited to take part. That was Brazil, who sent their U-23s to the tournament. An own goal from Marcelo Balboa separated the two sides in the semi-final. The US beat Guatemala in the next game to finish third, while Mexico breezed the final against Brazil.



Game 9

USA 1-0 Brazil

(Los Angeles, Feb 10 1998, CONCACAF Gold Cup)

Having won two years prior with their U-23s, Brazil expected little difficulty in sweeping aside the USA with their senior side. In fact, a sole goal from Preki, a former indoor soccer player and the current coach of Chivas USA, gave USA their first and, to date, only win over the Selecao. What a shame only 12,000 fans were there to see it.


Game 10

Brazil 1-0 USA

(Guadalajara, Jul 28 1999, Confederations Cup)

Another Confederations Cup meeting, but this time in the group stages. Ronaldinho had set the opening game against Germany alight with a penalty and an otherwise superb showing in a 4-0 win, but then came the USA, who had only just edged past New Zealand. In fact, Brazil were to find it tough, a sole Ronaldinho goal settling the score. He went on to score three in the semis against Saudi Arabia, but Brazil lost the final to Mexico. Either way, American audiences never forgot his brilliance.


Game 11

USA 1-2 Brazil

(Pasadena, Mar 3 2001, Friendly)

USA fans had a chance to see Ronaldinho Gaucho, as he was then known, up close and personal two years later on the outskirts of LA. Brazil were hot favourites, but it wasn't easy for them: Ronaldinho (inevitably) opened the scoring, but a Clint Mathis equaliser seemed to set the game up for a draw. However, substitute Euller scored one of his three international goals to seal yet another Selecao win.



Game 12

Brazil 1-0 USA

(Lyon, Jun 21 2003, Confederations Cup)

The two sides were drawn against each other in the group stage of the CCs, and while the USA were underdogs, Brazil were expected to sail past Cameroon, Turkey and the Americans. In fact, Samuel Eto'o saw to it that Brazil lost their first match, so the pressure was on against a USA side who had, in turn, been defeated by the Turks. Like the last meeting, a sole goal was enough, this time from Adriano in front of a small crowd in Lyon. It wasn't good for either side, though: both ended up eliminated in the first round.


Game 13

USA 1-2 Brazil (aet)

(Miami, Jul 23 2003, CONCACAF Gold Cup)

Brazil's U-23s were present again for the Gold Cup and gained revenge for the senior side's loss in 1998 with an extra-time victory. The USA seemed set for another historic win when Carlos Bocanegra gave them the lead deep in the second half, but a certain Kaka - who had barely played in the World Cup the previous year - scored an equaliser right at the death. Then Diego sealed the deal in extra time. Kaka went on to captain the side in the final, where they lost 1-0, but the USA finished third after defeating Costa Rica.


Game 14

USA 2-4 Brazil

(Chicago, Sep 9 2007, Friendly)

The low-scoring pattern of play between the sides well and truly came to an end with a barnstormer in the Windy City. Carlos Bocanegra once again looked like being the vanquisher as he opened the scoring, but an Oguchi Onyewu OG levelled matters. Lucio then put Brazil ahead, but Clint Dempsey equalised. It was a grandstand finish, though, as Ronaldinho curled home a free-kick and Elano netted from the penalty spot at the death to make it 4-2 to the visitors. It was, however, a game that was closer than the scoreline suggested.


Game 15

Brazil 3-0 USA

(Tshwane/Pretoria, Jun 18 2009, Confederations Cup)

Brazil made short work of the USA in Pretoria thanks to an early goal from Felipe Melo and a follow-up from Robinho within twenty minutes. Maicon's strike from an acute angle completed the win. This was one of the most one-sided games between the sides ever, and it seemed set to eliminate the US: however, the Americans overcame a six goal deficit and a three point gap to qualify in second place for the next stage, and then beat Spain in the semi-finals to set up a rematch...
