Stewart Downing will sign for Aston Villa on Thursday, but only if he passes a rigorous medical. Middlesbrough have accepted a £12 million bid from Villa, and Downing is also thought to have agreed personal terms.

According to The Guardian, Villa want to make sure that the damage to Downing's foot, which he broke in a match against them, will not last longer than expected.

The winger will have a pin removed from the fracture in September and could return in October at the earliest, but is more realistically expected to debut for the Midlanders in December. Meanwhile, Martin O'Neill has stressed that Downing's signing does not mean that Ashley Young will leave the club, especially as Downing could be out for the first half of the season.
